Knowing your audience and giving them what they like but occasionally teaching them as well.

I think you have to know your music well.

 

The ONLY thing the is required of a DJ is to do his/her job....

which is to entertain the crowd in front of them...

its that simple.

I believe if your a mobile DJ, weddings, engagements, stag and does, anniversaries, baptisms etc. Having clean radio edits makes all the difference.
No one wants to hear uncensored versions. Often you have a wide range of adults and children at these events.

 

Make sure you have nice gyal next to yuh without that you could never be a good DJ LOL

 

I'd say the type of music played and mixing style

 

A DJ needs to know what song to play at what time. Need to let the hits play fully. Seen a lot of DJs swap songs and ruin the mood on the dance floor.

 

A DJ is good based on his audience, just like being graded based upon a performance. When it comes to music selection, mixing, sound fx, mic talk etc., it doesn't really matter. One thing that does matter more than your skill level is your sound quality and appearance. Whatever you are playing, if you are coming across with a good system with deep bass, nice level mids and highs, lighting, etc. You are going to be liked.

 

Open mind to variety of music and lots of practice practice practice.

I used to DJ for years, using Vinyl records (most of you probably don't know what that is now, LOL).
But there are a few good tips to be a good DJ, some but not all, were said.
First thing to remember is the crowd, who you are DJing for. A younger group, an older group, and
the occasion and the list can keep going on.
You have to look at the dancefloor, or the mood of the people. Don't start playing "jump up" songs
while people are eating, play something on the easy going side.
One thing though, about DJing, you should learn how to beat match. Meaning how to mix the songs
so there is no missing beat between the two songs. When you are switching between slow and fast songs,
it's OK to fade out and back in with the different one, being a different speed (ie. slow song english song to
dancehall reggae or soca). Hope this helps. And by the way, it's easy nowadays to beat match with software
on you computer, so it should be easier than spinning the records.
