I borrowed a laptop from a friend, since I need to send my one and only laptop in for repair. (Hardware problems, its still under warranty). The problem is, the laptop he lent me only has linux on it. I need to run Serato or even VDJ because I have a gig this weekend, and so I would probably need Windows.

I tried to install Windows XP to it, but the optical drive is damaged (my guess). It sounds like a tractor trailer when trying to boot from a bootable disc and then eventually just gives up.

I tried to install windows onto his internal drive from usb, but it wouldn't work, and I can't format his drive. I'm trying to install from a usb drive to a usb drive (both a jump drive and my external) and its not working. Anyone have any ideas?

does the software you are using require dedicated hardware?

you can install virutalization software in linux then install windows as a guess OS.
run your windows apps inside the guest OS.

if the app is looking for specific hardware it might not work, so check that out before starting.

ok so you tried installing from USB, I'm assuming you were able to get into the windows installation wizard with out issues but just didn't see the drive? If that is the case you might want to check if the laptop comes with an option for RAID (this option normally comes with high end gaming laptops with 2 HDD) or it might be some weird drive\mb that you need to install a driver before the wizard can detect it.

If your doing XP, I think there is a option to hit F6 to load drivers and if you doing Win7 you will see a part that you can click <Options> and then you will see <Load Driver>....guess of the top of my head.
