i formatted my laptop. and now when i installed windows 7 it won't connect to the internet it connects to my home network but labels it as unidentified network with no internet access but my PC gets connection and its connected through the wire from my router.. even when i put the wire directly into my laptop same problem my friend said it could e a router issue and i don't know how to set it up.. ive also installed ALL the dell network drivers, so i duno if anyone has any other ideas... thanks...
You might still need to install or update the wireless card drivers. Look under Device Manager and see if there is anything with a yellow exclamation or question mark.
Yes most likely it's the router. Wired would work fine but wireless is a hassle to set up sometimes. Just keep messing with it and it should work.
on ur pc thats hooked up wired open up IE or firefox and type in; 192.168.1.1 ur router menu should pop up, it might ask for a password (you should know the password, or look in the manual or google for the default password) tweak with the settings there, if u have security, turn it off and try connecting wirelessly if ur laptop still doesnt connect, consider purchasing a new router, maybe its too old? do any other wireless devices connect to it?
wel if ure connecting ur laptop wirelessely to the router its not a wireless adapter problem on your laptop.because it picks up the signal from the router.so its not a driver problem either im assuming its ur desktop pc and that u can successfully surf the net when u use the cables.if this is the case then your broadband connection is fine .it also means your router is fine coz it can route packets successfully. ok so u got wired connection to work on ur desktop pc right? so y wouldn't that same wire work on your laptop? well by chance do you have xp on the PC and Windows 7 on the laptop ? if u do then you may want to cheak your ip settings on ur laptop.make sure ipv4 is set to "obtain ip adress automatically" and make sure your browser ip settings is set to "automatically detect settings". once done you should be able to surf the net from the laptop using the wires. as for wireless connection on the laptop.ure able to send packets not recieve. this usually means ur DHCP server is down.a simple reboot of both cable modem and router should fix this.unplug both devices from the wall plug for 30 seconds, then plug them back in. and cross ur fingers coz sumtimes it takes several tries.
What brand is your laptop? It would be best to check their website (using your PC) under "support" they actually might have the solution for those who have upgraded to windows7
Another thing you can try that happened to me....under the properties of your wireless network card, make sure the box is checked that says let windows control the network card. I couldn't connect to internet after installing windows 7 and after hours of fiddling realized it was just that check mark.
on the back of the router, theres a tiny hole that says reset next to it, take a pin and hold it down for 30 secs with the router on. then let it start up and you should be good. note that it resets all security settings so dont forget to set a password after.
- Upgrading your wireless router is better. When ever a new router comes out, its best off getting it, I have the latest Linksys Router, its still crappy, but it works better then the old one.
one quick test plug in your laptop with the cable and go to start and type in cmd, then when the command prompt box opens up type ping google.com and see if it comes back with data or it says fail. After you do this msg me and let me know what you get and i can help you out further.
